Three Roll Mill
A Three Roll Mill (Three Roll Mill 101) has three horizontally positioned rollers. Each roller rotates in an opposite direction from the adjacent roller with a tiny gap between them, creating tremendous shear force that can finely disperse, mix, refine or homogenize viscous materials. They are widely used to mix electronic thick film inks, high performance ceramics, cosmetics, plastisols, carbon/graphite, paints, printing inks, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, glass coatings, dental composites, pigment, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and foods.
As you see in the illustration, the material is loaded between the feeder roll and the center roll. Due to the narrowing space between the rolls, most of the mixture is rejected to the feed region. The part does make it through experiences very high shear force and disperses the pigment particles in the binder. As it comes out the other side, the material that remains on the center roll moves through to nip between the center roll and apron roll, experiencing even high shear force due to the higher speeds. A blade automatically scrapes the processed mixture off the apron roll transfers it to the apron. The three roll milling cycle is repeated many times until the material is perfectly dispersed and the particle size is in the good range.

Three Roll Mill Structure
The Three Roller Mill is made up of the machine base, cover, roller bearing, Teflon endplates, discharge collecting blade, cooling system, gears and wheels. There are a total of six bearing bases for high speed roller, medium speed roller and low speed roller supported by base orbit. Among them, the medium speed roller is fixed to the base and cover.The fast and slow rollers can be moved horizontally via turning wheel spring to reach the desired grinding fineness.
Three Roll Mill Cooling System
As you can see in the illustration, cooling water goes in throught the pink tunnel and flows into the blind hole inside the roller. The blind hole is designed with a slight slope so that water eventually flows back out into the water tank. There is an outlet through which water flows out of the water tank. The same mechanism can be used to heat up the rollers if hot liquid is pumped into the rollers. We had a customer who pumped hot oil into the rollers to heat the rollers up to 60C.
